Lyme, NH

 

Located across the border from Thetford, Vermont, Lyme is a small town surrounded by scenic landscapes. Founded back in 1761, the quiet New England town is located in the Upper Valley just north of Hanover. The area is dotted with farmland, and north of town is serene Post Pond. The town has a distinct charm, thanks in no small part to its traditional New England homes.

 

Lyme is home to Dartmouth Skiway. The Skiway offers something truly unique; a traditional New England ski experience which is a rarity in today’s hyper-competitive ski world. Lyme is also roughly 10 miles from Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire. Around Lyme, you’ll find several fun places to shop and some unique restaurants to enjoy. Nearby, there are scenic hiking trails through the countryside.

 

Lyme offers a peaceful way of life and features many places to enjoy nature, from hiking trails, skiing, or boating on Post Pond. Also, Lyme residents don’t have to go far to get to a campground as there are multiple ones nearby.

 

You’ll find some great restaurants with down-home charm. The Latham House Tavern lays claim to the “Best Burger in the Upper Valley.” It also features a range of foods, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Ariana’s Restaurant at the Lyme Inn features a seasonal focus featuring many different proteins, especially local and sustainable meats, and seafood. Stella’s Italian Kitchen serves Italian food to-go. If you’re looking for something closer to nature, there’s The Restaurant at Loch Lyme Lodge. Although it’s not open all the time, it has plenty of food to choose from, including vegetarian options, the ability to accommodate vegans, and a children's menu. The Lodge has 120 acres of waterfront that is a favorite place for weddings, family reunions, and other special occasions. They also have rustic cabins, fireplaces, and an outdoor patio with a grill. 

 

When it comes to shopping, residents of Lyme have several unique options. One of which is the Lyme Country Store. Like the general stores of yore, the Lyme Country Store has a lot to offer. It’s a gas station, grocery store, and a lot more. Matt Brown Fine Art represents over 40 different artists, sculptors, woodworkers, printmakers, jewelers, and potters. They hold different events all year round and are definitely worth a visit!

 

Being a small town out in the country, it’s no surprise there are a lot of fun things to do outdoors. There are plenty of great hiking trails in the area. Part of the famous Appalachian Trail winds through the outside of town. Holt’s Ledge, located southeast of Lyme, has a trail that rewards the hiker with a stunning view of a forest-covered landscape. Lyme Pinnacle Conservation Area is a nature preserve that features multiple trails. Smarts Mountain has a hiking trail that loops up the tree-covered mountain. The Lyme Hill Conservation Area features beautiful forest trails to hike through.

 

For fans of skiing, there’s the Dartmouth Skiway. It has multiple trails for different skill levels, plus a snow sports school. It also offers rentals and features an equipment shop called McNay’s that services equipment. The Utility Club of Lyme, a not-for-profit organization with an over 100-year history, has an annual picnic. It is a wonderful time for the community to gather over food and fun.
