Local Lifestyle - Living in Thetford

Life in Thetford is influenced by the cultural and employment opportunities provided by its proximity and easy access to Hanover and Lebanon and by its unspoiled views and traditional way of life. It features several places to enjoy nature, such as Thetford Hill State Park and easy access to the Ompompanoosuc and Connecticut Rivers. Roughly half the town comprises working professionals that make the 20-minute commute to work in Hanover or Lebanon. The other half are working townspeople that work locally.

Dining & Shopping in Thetford

As may be expected, a rural town such as Thetford does not have a vibrant dining scene. In fact, there are no full-service restaurants serving dinner. Camino Cinco on Route 5 serves traditional Mexican tacos for lunch in-season, and Red Clover Café and Creamery serves hearty lunch fare and ice cream on Friday through Sunday.

Every town must have a coffee shop, and Thetford is no different. Hello Café is a little coffee shop behind Cedar Circle Farm's farmstand. They serve organic, fair trade coffee, espresso, and excellent teas and tisanes from Free Verse Farm in Chelsea, Vermont. Their baristas serve up some of the best drinks around! Treats are baked fresh in their on-site farm kitchen. They strive to use the highest quality ingredients available, including organic, non-GMO grains, organic dairy, and vegetables and berries are grown on the farm.

Never fret, however! One will find some great restaurants just over the historic (it's on the National Register) Lyme-East Thetford Bridge in Lyme, NH. The Latham House Tavern lays claim to the "Best Burger in the Upper Valley." It also features a range of foods, including vegetarian and gluten-free options. Ariana's Restaurant at the Lyme Inn features a seasonal focus featuring many different proteins, predominantly local and sustainable meats, and seafood. Stella's Italian Kitchen serves Italian food to-go. If you're looking for something closer to nature, there's The Restaurant at Loch Lyme Lodge. Although it's not open all the time, it has plenty of food to choose from, including vegetarian options, the ability to accommodate vegans, and a children's menu.

Shopping opportunities are varied. East Thetford is home to Pompanoosuc Mills. They've earned a national reputation over the course of nearly 50 years for building exceeding high-quality furniture by hand at their workshop on Route 5. Long Wind Farm has provided New England with delicious organic tomatoes since 1984. Grown in Vermont soil in glass greenhouses, their tomatoes are available as early as March and as late as December each year. One doesn't have to travel far to buy essential groceries. Wing's Supermarket on Route 5 has all the bases covered, including a great deli with take-out sandwiches. E. C. Brown's Nursery was founded in 1967 with a vision to create a small "mom and pop" nursery and landscaping business that would serve the Upper Valley. They place an emphasis on underused, underappreciated, and unknown plants that complement tried and true offerings.

Outdoor Pursuits

Thetford offers the opportunity to pursue traditional activities, including nordic skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, boating, swimming, and fishing. But for the truly adventurous, try joining the Post Mills Soaring Club based at the private Post Mills Airport. There is nothing quite like soaring in a glider over the Green Mountains of Vermont!

Thetford Hill State Park offers nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking in large measure, thanks to next-door neighbor, Thetford Academy. The academy constructed the 5-kilometer Woods Hill Trail, a cross-country, trail running, and ski trail, in 1991. It is considered one of New England's finest running trails. The course has hosted multiple Vermont and New England running championships. The Ompompanoosuc and Connecticut Rivers offer boating, kayaking, and canoeing enthusiasts a wealth of opportunities and are also an angler's delight. Thetford residents can also enjoy swimming, fishing, picnicking, and volleyball at Treasure Island Beach on Lake Fairlee.

Schools in Thetford

The Thetford School District is responsible for the town's children's education from kindergarten through 12th grade. Thetford children attend Thetford Elementary School for K-6 and private Thetford Academy for grades 7-12. The academy is a historic New England Town Academy (one of approximately 20 remaining in Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Connecticut).
