Dining & Shopping

Orford is not known for being a dining destination, but what it lacks in quantity, it makes up for with quality. Peyton Place Restaurant on Route 10 is known for its diverse menu made entirely from scratch, emphasizing farm-to-table, organic ingredients. Their menu is a convergence of French, Thai, Italian, Vietnamese, American, and Latin American cuisines. And yes, they have pizza too on Sundays! There are also a few more options over the bridge in Fairlee, including Samurai Soul Food, Jan's Fairlee Diner, Sunnyside Coffee, and Leda's Pizza.

Shopping opportunities include what you would expect from a small rural town; homegrown, locally owned specialty shops. Mount Cube Farm offers traditional maple products, including syrup and maple sugar offerings…of course! Cube Mountain Products makes the finest handmade wreaths available anywhere. Their wreaths are created from the highest-quality materials, grown and cultivated right on their 600-acre farm as well as other surrounding northern New England farms. Mill Gardens Farm Stand caters to beginner and expert gardeners alike. They are a family-owned and operated garden center located on Route 10. They provide high-quality plants, supplies, and customer service to their customers.

For those looking for the perfect antique stove to complement their period home, look no further than Evansville Antique Stove Company. They specialize in the restoration and sale of antique wood cook stoves, especially Atlantic, Crawford, and Glenwood. They provide a service that is becoming a lost art.

Outdoor Pursuits

There are numerous hiking opportunities throughout the area, starting with the granddaddy of them all, the Appalachian Trail. The Trail traverses Orford via the northern slopes of Smarts Mountain and crosses MT Cube, the highest point in Orford, on its way to MT Moosilauke further north. The Cross Rivendell Trail is a local jewel that runs 36 miles connecting the four towns of the Rivendell Interstate School district in Vermont and New Hampshire. It begins at Flagpole Hill in Vershire, VT, and joins up with the Appalachian Trail atop of MT. Cube.

The Connecticut River offers boating, kayaking, and canoeing enthusiasts a wealth of opportunities and is also an angler's delight. In addition, boaters and anglers enjoy Indian Pond, Upper and Lower Baker Ponds, and Reeds Marsh Wildlife Management Area. Orford is also a crossroads for two major state roads providing cyclists north-south access to beautiful rides along the Connecticut River and east-west access to various points in the White Mountains and Vermont.

Orford belongs to the Rivendell Inter-State School District (SAU #78), which also includes the towns of Fairlee, West Fairlee, and Vershire in Vermont. Orford's K-fifth grade students attend Samuel Morey Elementary School in Fairlee, and grades 6-12 attend Rivendell Academy in Orford.
